Why is my dog stiffer in the morning or after sleeping?

The short answer!

When your dog is resting, the lubricating fluid in their joints thickens up. The first few movements feel stiff because it takes time for the joints to warm up and circulation to improve.

Synovial fluid - the lubricant in your dog's joints - thickens when joints are immobile, like oil in a cold engine. It takes a few minutes of movement to warm up and flow properly. In dogs with early joint changes, there's often less synovial fluid or it's lower quality, so joints take longer to 'warm up' (1).

When your dog is resting or sleeping, particularly in cold weather, synovial fluid becomes more viscous and inflammatory mediators (substances the body produces in response to wear and irritation, and they contribute to stiffness and discomfort) accumulate in the joint. When your dog first stands up, there's more friction until movement stimulates circulation and warms the joint. This is why the first few steps look stiff. You will probably notice your dog 'walking it off'.

If stiffness doesn't improve after 10-15 minutes of gentle movement, or if it's getting progressively worse week by week, get a check up with your vet.
